Protect my mind from temptation and wicked thoughts. Give me the strength to do my work, to save Joseph, and to remain pure in your sight. Amen." I stood up and wiped a stray tear from my cheek. I hadn’t come all the way here to be defeated by the devil.

“Please… What can I do?” “You must offer a heavy penance for the purification of your mind and heart,” the priest said, solemnly. “You will chant one hundred Hail Marys, contemplating Our Lady’s purity, and you will pray fervently for the salvation of your soul and the strength to turn away from this path.” He finished. He paused briefly, before starting a prayer.

The priest continues. The entire church is quiet and everyone is listening keenly to the priest speak. My palms are getting sweaty and I look up at Mitch. He looks comfortable, and dare I say, even confident. “This outward celebration we shall see and hear is an expression of the inner love and devotion they have in their hearts,” The Priest’s voice booms loudly in the church. Love? Devotion? I think I am going to puke. It seems like everyone else is enjoying the priest’s speech, they are all smiling and adoringly staring at us.

"Devon, this is a sin against the heavens. You must not do this. Please..."
