Sometimes, when I would find myself in a discomfiting position, I would imagine what it felt like to be breathless; I wondered what it would feel like to be completely, utterly, breathless and for every single breath of air to leave one's body. Truthfully speaking, I had always pondered the idea and the concept of shock as it was a phenomenon that caused me great intrigue. It usually was a feeling of distress and disbelief that one would have when something; either bad or good; happened accidentally.

For a moment, both sides clearly froze in shock. ***

Kael's POV For a heartbeat, none of us moved. It was as if the very earth held its breath, caught in the throes of something too wicked to comprehend. Lyria’s gasp shattered the silence. "No... no, Hood... no!" Her voice cracked like glass under pressure, disbelief and horror woven tightly into each syllable. Her hands, once balled into fists of fury ready to strike, trembled at her sides. My own body refused to move. My knees buckled beneath me, but I was somehow still standing, frozen by shock more than strength.

All that existed was his face, frozen in a mask of stunned bewilderment. All of my earlier planning evaded me when the overwhelming terror ripped through my soul like a hot dagger. No, no, no... This could not be happening. My body was reacting to the crushing weight of horror. I was no longer struggling, not even a little, I was not moving, I was frozen in place. My body had chosen neither fight nor flight; it had chosen to freeze. I had been in horrendous situations during my stay in this accursed place, but this was different and far worse.

Her eyebrows slowly unknotted. And then, her entire world tilted. The blood drained from her face. Her lips parted. She couldn’t move. Couldn’t blink. Her pupils trembled at what was happening inside. Goosebumps filled her body. The pure horror filled her veins like ice. The hair on her body stood violently as terror flashed infront her naive eyes.

Something sharp and electric that makes my nose burn. Sound comes next and it’s chaos. Alarms screaming somewhere far away and way too close at the same time. Shouting. Boots on stone. Something heavy crashing. My own heartbeat pounding in my ears like a drum I can’t shut up. Light stabs through my eyelids and I swear and squeeze them shut again, jaw clenching so hard it aches. My body shakes. Not fear. Shock. That horrible after-effect when you’ve been out for too long and someone yanks you back without warning.

I stare at the words—a grotesque collage of torn letters pasted onto the sheet—my eyes wide, lips slightly parted, a dull, nauseating pressure building behind my blurred vision. Nervousness, fear, and a tidal wave of extreme shock are not just emotions; they are physical sensations, shuddering through and leaking out of every nerve in my body. It feels like electric lightning and liquid fire simultaneously coursing through my veins, threatening to overload my system. My mind is a siren, screaming, trying desperately to understand what the hell I am seeing. *Hell no.*

His voice was like thunder, filling the room and making my heart jump. Sherry and Allison, who had been lounging on the bed with me just moments ago, leapt up as if struck by lightning. Their faces drained of color, and their hands shook as they grabbed at their clothes, desperately trying to cover themselves. I watched them in confusion, not quite understanding why they were so scared of him.

He pauses, glancing between us. I’m totally confused about what ‘psychogenic shock’ actually means, but by the look on his face, it seems serious. “What does that mean?” I ask. “It’s a kind of shock, but it’s triggered by intense emotional stress, not a physical injury. It’s like when someone goes through something super overwhelming, like what Brooke faced. It can make the body react as if it is in shock—stuff like low blood pressure, dizziness, and even memory loss. It’s like her mind couldn’t take everything at once, and her body just shut down to protect her.”
