— The House by the Sea, Night Deep into the night, silence enveloped the house overlooking the sea. The distant sound of waves drifted through the windows, filling the emptiness with a soft but steady rhythm. Daniel and Rovan were asleep, each in their own room, enveloped in the stillness that followed a night of terror. Malik and Dima emerged from their rooms, each wearing a mask. Their footsteps were measured on the cold floor. The night air slid through the slightly open windows, gently stirring the curtains, as if the house itself were breathing softly.

Only the sight of the house saved me. I bolted from the car, desperate for a cold shower to burn off the fire. But before I could escape down the hall, I froze. Cassie stood behind me, eyes wide and glistening, like a lost little lamb begging not to be abandoned. “Can you stay with me tonight?” she whispered. I groaned. “Cassie, please we talked..” But she closed the distance, her finger pressing gently against my lips. “I promise I won’t cross the line. I just…I can’t sleep alone tonight. Please?” Her breath was shaky, her eyes damp with sincerity.

"I'll tell you what you want to know if you let me out." I burst out laughing. "Yeah, right! Like I'm going to fall for that!" I tilted my head to the side. "Where is the Nightshade base?" He smirked. "In Canada." "I mean here, you moron!" I yelled, raising my hands again. "Tell me what I want to know, or I'll tear you apart!" He scoffed. "Now, that I'd like to see." I balled my fists and placed one on top of the other, concentrating as I stared at him. Then I tightened my grip and started pulling them apart as he gasped, lifting off his feet.

They both knew what was to come. “Olivia, broke you.” The glow of her eyes died out. Donte’s fangs were deep into her neck, ripping into tender flesh. Lily screamed in pain. She tried to push him off, tried to get away, but couldn’t. His body engulfed her, and caged her in. He would feast upon her until she was drained. Elias wrapped his tail around Donte’s throat, and pulled him off. It wasn’t often that he dared to show the limb, but when he did, he meant business. Elias placed his fingers on his temples, whispering to Donte until he succumbed to sleep.

Just the certainty of who stood beside you when difficult things arrived. Outside, night deepened slowly beyond the windows. Inside, laughter and arguments tangled together upstairs while warm light filled the rooms below. And the house held all of it within its walls. The noise. The peace. The love. Afterwards I decide to go back upstairs and rest for the remainder of the evening. Night falls, and with it a thunderstorm stirs up. Lightening cracks and for some reason outside of my bedroom, I swear I see sinister red eyes peering in at me. Feel like it must be the exhaustion of the day. I close the blinds, turn on N*****x. I feel dread again as a precaution. I make sure the house is locked up with the deadbolts he installed. I also lock my room to make sure I am extra safe. I snuggle up with a blanket and put on the TV. I change my mind about N*****x and put on “Discovery of Witches” on A****n Prime. Wishing I could find a man like Matthew.

Now I knew he'd been bleeding me dry for Riley Anderson, his childhood sweetheart. "I want to refinance the house, too," he added. I stopped what I was doing, my hands frozen in the sink, and turned to stare straight at him. "You really want your four three-year-old sons to end up homeless?" This house wasn't much, just a small three-bedroom, but it was ours—the one we'd fought for, saved for, and sacrificed for. The mortgage wasn't even close to being paid off. His name was on the deed because when we first bought it, I had been out of town on business. He'd told me it would be easier that way, with him making the payments.

Surprisingly, I don't find the idea disturbing. Feeling boredom as it sets in quickly, I make my way over to the bookshelf. I start to peruse the titles and am shocked at what I find. I see the House of Night Series, The Twilight Series, Forbidden Knowledge, Harry Potter Trilogy, and various books on Military Protocols all with black covers. The books are all in good condition too. Not interested in any of the military books I reach for the first book in the House of Night Series. As I take the book over to the couch to settle in, the door swings open.

Silver-blonde hair fell in wild tangles down my back, streaked with dooms and dried blood that was not my own. I was the last. The last daughter of House Nicodemus. The final spark of a proud northern bloodline now reduced to ghost dust by the man who sat upon my father’s throne. Tariq Wolfe. He was no ordinary Alpha. He was a mountain of a man, towering well over six and a half feet, built like the ancient war gods carved into the old temples. You'd think it's a normal room but no, it's full of everything to weapons, machineries,bunks, Tents, Sleeping bags, Sleeping pads, Camping pillows, lamps, flashlights, Camp chairs, Camp tables, Lantern, etc. 'What are these?'. 'These are the equipments you'll be using on your hunt for predators'. I nodded. 'So, when should I begin?'. 'Tomorrow'. 'Tomorrow? But don't you think that's too early?'. 'No'. 'Oh ,OK'. 'Go and bid your family and loved ones goodbye, because after tomorrow, you might not be seeing them again'. She smirked then left me standing, gaping at her shapey retreating figure. ¶•¶•¶•¶
