He swallowed the lump in his throat, his heart aching with guilt so deep it made his stomach hurt.
“Hey, don’t say that,” he said softly, reaching out to hold Henry’s hand. “She didn’t mean to hurt you.”
But the boy turned his face away, tears already rolling down. “I hate her,” he whispered.
Alex shut his eyes, the words cutting into him like knives. He couldn’t blame the boy not after what he’d seen, what he’d lived with the past week.
He stood up suddenly, grabbed his wallet, and rushed outside. He didn’t even care that his hair was messy or that he still wore yesterday’s clothes. He needed to fix something — anything for him.
