This is why black roses are now only cultivated in laboratories, under strict supervision and the direct command of the King. I rose up from the floor, keeping my weight on my right leg as I plucked out the glass shards. Then I wrenched the stake out of my leg and stood up on shaky legs, almost falling over as the pain made my vision blur. Walking was even more difficult since I now had a gaping hole in my leg and it won’t be healing for another day with the Holly and Buckthorn now in my bloodstream.

It was even still dripping from his bloodied hands and the scent of it was so disgusting that I felt like throwing up. He bent over on one knee in front of me and his right hand was holding a black rose. My lips were quivering while feeling the fear within my body. Using the black rose, he gently rubbed it on my skin. It went smoothly and I even felt something tingling inside me as my thoughts went too wild.

I was wearing a flowing black garment that draped around me, the dark fabric swaying with every subtle movement. Real flowers adorned the fabric—delicate yet striking black roses, their petals velvety and deep as the night. The sight of them sent my mind spiraling back to that eerie moment when we discovered a basket of black roses outside our estate gates. A sudden sensation on my head made me flinch. But then, the roses arrived. I came home after another long day at work to find a bouquet of black roses on my doorstep. They were tied with a simple white ribbon, the stark contrast making them look even more ominous. The card attached was worse: *“You belong to me.”* I stared at the flowers, my chest tightening. Who would send something like this? My mind raced, but no obvious answers came to me. My first instinct was to call Crystal, but I hesitated. What could she do? It wasn’t as though she could make this stop.

I look at the box and smile. “These were just delivered for you.” Anna tells me placing the box on my desk. “I swear you two are so adorable. He is literally next door and still sends flowers!” She grins like a schoolgirl on Valentine’s Day. I give her a smile. “Thanks Anna, that will be all.” She nods and closes the door. I untie the fancy red ribbon and open the box to see a dozen black roses. My smile instantly drops. I know black roses are not a symbol of love. I pick one up and it nicks me. The roses are full of thorns. I hiss from the sting and suck on my finger. I search for a card. Once I find it, I throw the flowers in the trash. Then I stand there and open the card.

Who wouldn’t when their cousin was standing in front of her own home gate, and staring at her house like a psycho? “Don’t apologize. Let’s get you inside before you catch a cold.” I nod, following her through the door. The walkway is just like I remember, on each side are prize winning roses. Of different colors. Huh? When do black roses exist? I took a small detour from following Alexis, bending over a patch of those strange black roses.
