I growled back. The brown wolf locked eyes with me. Malice jumped and jived in his eyes. He was getting closer and closer. His breath wafted in from a current. Made my inside curdle. It smelled of carrion and disease. The kind of breath that meant his mouth would cause more harm through infection than bite. The beast reared to pounce. Aimed for my throat. But a whistle broke the air. For a second, I let hope blossom in my chest again. Let it flutter to the top. Dance at the edges of my heart. Until I saw who had whistled.

In less than three minutes all four were ready for action. “You two?” Timothy pointed to Harold and Julie. “Head to the security checkpoint and hold there. Salem, go kill every creature in the holding area.” A minute later all four headed out of the office only to be greeted by the twins. Harold and Julie opened fire as Salem dove to the ground and crawled to the left of the door. Timothy took the right. Several vampires and wolves advanced along with two were-panthers. Gunshots rang out through the small hallway.

Then, he heard a snarl, and the door flew open. A large wolf stood in the doorway, its eyes glowing red in the darkness. Fionn was frozen in terror, unable to move. But then, Tela let out a howl of her own. It was high and clear, and it cut through the night like a knife. The wolf in the doorway flinched, stepping back. Tela's howl echoed through the forest, and soon, other howls joined hers. The wolf at the door turned tail and ran, followed by the rest of the pack. Tela let out one last howl, and then silence fell.
