I’m in the pitch black again and cannot move. I hear a growl and see a pair of yellow eyes in the darkness. I’ve never been so scared, all I wanted was the light to come back. The flames start reigniting on the walls and I make eye contact with the most beautiful white wolf I’ve ever seen. It’s walking towards me growling; all of the hair standing up on its back. The weight of the foot comes off my back and I rush to my feet. “Did you make a friend? How fun now I get it to kill you both.” The voice growls again.

A solid reality that defied all the logic and reasoning of reality. His black eyes clamped shut. A moment later when they snapped open, they were glowing. They were glowing bright golden and they were fixed right onto mine. He raised his head up toward the moon and let out a loud, high-pitched, vicious, and shrilling howl. Just then, a dozen other howls echoed in the air as if in response. I jerked around and saw the source of those growls. Were there any dangerous, wild animals lurking around us? Were there more wolves? Were they out there to harm me?

There was the sound of Miller's breathing, the hiss of the dying acid and the distant thud of the manual water wheels beginning to turn. "Elara," a voice whispered from the dark behind the line. It wasn't a voice. It was a sound that traveled through the iron rails. A scratching vibration that resembled the sound of claws, against dry shale. The workers froze, their safety lamps turning toward the mouth of the lower haulage drift. The yellow beams cut through the white acid smoke revealing a shadow that was large too heavy to belong to any human engineer. From the fog, the great wolf emerged.

“It’s reacting to her.” “To me?” I said. He looked at me. “You woke something. The flame in you and the river’s call are connected now. It won’t stay quiet for long.” I wanted to ask what that meant, but the sound cut me off — faint at first, then sharper. Wolves. Howling. Not far. Jordan turned fast. “We need to move.” Revan’s eyes narrowed. “How many?” “Too many to count.” The howls grew louder. They weren’t ordinary. They carried that strange echo I’d heard once before — the sound of the Darkborn.

I muttered under my breath but then I heard the howling sound of one of the prisoners and I couldn’t stop my anger so I turned and walked to the place the howling was coming from. I hack the door with my crawls and with eyes as red as blood, I stop his howling by digging my sharp crawls into his neck. I watched as his howls turned weak and then he started whimpering, I watched as blood drained out of his neck then he turned cold, I watched all this and then became calm looking at the blood.

I drank a shot of tequila. My thirteenth, if I had not lost count of the last three hours. I tapped my forehead and wiped away the sweat before commanding my senses to allow my claws to appear. I walked towards the lady in front of me, kneeling and clutching her fist to her chest, obviously in pain. I sighed as I watched her eyes form tears but she was holding it in, alright. She looked pitiful. “Natyaramona,” I called her name, pushing her back to her senses while hoping she wouldn't die.
