I puffed some air of satisfaction, knowing that I am one step closer to gaining my freedom back. I strode my steps out of the dungeon, following what seemed to be an endless hallway. But stopped momentarily, when I caught a glimpse of the little banners waving outside through a small window I passed by. I suck a deep breath, realizing what it was. The sigil was a wolf howling under the crescent moon. I couldn’t be mistaken. The logo belonged to the Royal Cavern Pack—the most dangerous pack among all packs on the continent! Oh, shit! ‘This is bad,’ Arwen uttered. Her voice was full of uncertainty.

It’s already being decorated for the summit. The lavish tapestries are being hung in the halls. Our clan emblem is a white dahlia with silhouetted lions running along a pedal on a purple banner. A full moon with three silver crescent moons surrounding it on a black flag stands for the Wolf’s Clan. A snake coiled across itself twice like an infinity-only vertical on a green banner for the Reptiles. The Fliers emblem, a feathered wing fanned out on a blue flag, acting as the sky. Finally, The Nomad’s a red banner with a sailing ship surrounded by all the points of a compass. Safe for true north, signifying they belong not to one but all.

It was an order from his Alpha, and to decline would have been unthinkable. Now, standing among the gathered students in the Grand Hall, Alex couldn’t shake his unease. He was surrounded by his friends: Sean, Sara, Kira, and William. The banners of the factions wolves, witches, vampires, and werecats, hung proudly above them, vibrant symbols of rivalry and unity. I’ll make the popcorn,” I say, showing Madelyn where to sit and grabbing a blanket off a chair to give to her. I don’t know if she’s still cold, but in case she is, I want to make sure she’s warm.

The entire forest seemed to glow that morning. Gold and silver banners rippled in the breeze, each stitched with the intertwined sigils of Blackpine, Twilight, and Phantom—once rival houses, now bound together. Wolves padded through the clearings dressed in ceremonial garb, their fur brushed with streaks of ochre and ash, symbols of loyalty and rebirth.

All of them pointed one direction, eyes hungry and white-rimmed in the torchlight, chins high so the breath comes out like foggy confession. The banners are out for spectacle: every house and bloodline’s, layered in blues and grays and bone-white, but ours—mine—dominates. The Vale wolf, all jaw and hunger, stitched in silver on midnight blue, frost riming the snarl. Wind snaps the canvas so the edges whip like whips, sharp and angry.

Red and gold banners hung in the top two towers with an emblem that I guessed was the schools. “Holy shit, I’m at Hogwarts,” Not realizing I said that out loud. “Only better,” she whispered in my ear, making me jump. “Come let me show you why it’s better. I looked at the grounds and school in awe. All of the students had black and white uniforms with a gold seal on the shirt. The girls wore checkered skirts with white blouses, and gray stockings. While the boys were in black slacks, a white button up and a red and black striped tie.

It was the second time I burned myself with my cup of tea. I had recently bought it when I discovered an internet store about literary articles, and I instantly fell in love with the Harry Potter-themed cup that only required the coat of arms belonging to the book when it was filled to the top by a smoking liquid. Most of the time, I just filled it with water just to have the pleasure of seeing the dark color giving way to the brightness that contained the drawing of the most famous magnificent witchcraft school in the literary world.
