Caroline broke into laughter, the kind that was too real to fake… quick, unguarded, spilling out of her chest. She even leaned forward, hand covering her mouth like she was trying to stifle it but failing. “Oh, don’t act so offended,” she said between breaths. “I’m complimenting you, idiot.”
“Compliment?” I echoed, still keeping my hand against my chest. “Sounded like a dagger wrapped in ribbon.”
She tilted her head, still smiling. “Maybe. But at least it’s honest.”
