“Quiet doesn’t mean unbothered. Just good at hiding it.” We fell into silence. The only sound was distant thunder rumbling above ground. I wondered how long we’d be down here. Minutes stretched. There are history books, Psychology books, Biographies even novels. Like actual novels. My eyebrows lift slowly as my eyes glaze over some of the titles as I picked one and flipped over them. “Well this is deeply upsetting.”I murmur under my breath. “What is?”Mercer says his voice sounds amused behind me. “You being literate.”I say in a mocking tone and that earns me a low laugh from somewhere near the kitchen and once again the sound lands directly in my chest. God I love his laugh! It’s dangerous but everything about this man feels dangerous in the most unfairly attractive way possible. I pull one of the books halfway from the shelf before freezing.

"Mr Philip sent me to give this to you." "Thanks." I collected the book to inspect the front cover, while he showed off some dimples. The book had a raccoon as it's display photo. The raccoon looked thrilled to bits with both hands up and mouth open like it was shouting. The background was yellow, it had the words, 'furiosly happy' boldly written on it. Under the book title, there were word too that said, 'a funny book about terrible things' written in smaller font, while the author's name was Jenny Lawson.

We had seamlessly transitioned from heavy, soul-baring trauma to quick-fire twenty questions, and finally landed on just talking absolute, comfortable rubbish. I was genuinely amazed by how much we had in common. Our views on parenting, our favourite sports teams, how many kids we vaguely wanted in the distant future... it was uncanny. I found myself feeling incredibly relaxed, as if I had known her intimately for years, rather than just having met her face-to-face that very morning amidst the chaos of a soft play centre. I read the child Gravity a ridiculously humorous book called I Need a New Butt. To me, it was the height of literature. Fart jokes? Yes. Crack jokes? Yes. Stupid pranks? Yes. The child was a handful, but at least she had an idea about selecting good books. I then covered her with a blanket as if to smother a fire.

Amber paused as she tried to form sentences but April burst into laughter and Amber frowned when she saw April laughing like that. April was laughing so hard that she was clutching her stomach. Amber looked at her and frowned, while Ashley was baffled as well, and Amber asked, “Why are you laughing like that? Did I say something funny?” April wiped a tear from her eyes and said, “of course, that was a nice joke, the guardian? The werewolf? Oh my god, Amber, just what books are you reading? I mean, it was really a nice joke, and I was trying my best to hold back my laughter, but on my god! When I saw your serious expression, I just couldn’t take it.” April said as she kept on laughing.

“She's starting to make jokes now.” “I was always funny,” I shot back. “You just weren’t paying attention.” Juno giggled from across the room. “You’re one of the most serious people I know, Thea. I think the last time you tried to tell a joke, it was about F. Scott Fitzgerald.” The brothers and Juno all laughed, but it wasn’t mean-spirited. It was gentle, teasing. Easy. “Hey!” I protested. “There’s lots of humor to be found in classic literature. Just look at Shakespeare! He’s full of excellent jokes.”
