Once a wolf finds her fire, no trap in the forest can keep her down. "Jordyn’s words have set my blood on fire," the pack-host announced, stepping up to the center of the dais with a wide grin. "Since Ava Hart is also in our midst, why don't we demand a tribute from these two sisters? Will you give us a song of the old wilds?" The hall responded with a deafening howl of approval. The host nodded, looking down at us. "Our Alphas agree. Go prepare your throats while we finish the lesser tributes."

"In three years I've never seen them move a final selection date for anything." Nala gave me control of my body back but I swear I could feel the triumphant smirk she was giving me. I held her gaze for a long moment. Then I looked down at the bottle. "Fine," I said. -~~~ The meatloaf went out on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, six of the forty-three tributes scheduled for final selection along with were reporting to the infirmary with stomach cramps. By mid-morning it was nine. By the time the session started, They were all sick and could barely stand.

"I’m sure they’re just testing each other’s strength, Mother. It’s how young males bond, isn’t it? Why don't we look at your tributes instead? Samson spent months tracking down a rare moon-lily tapestry for you. I know you’ve been wanting one for your private den." She shot a sharp, meaningful look at Ritchie, then gripped Nora’s wheelchair, steering the old woman toward the stone stairs before she could witness the blood in the water. Seeing Logan surrounded by those high-caste predators in their polished boots and tailored suits—seeing them snarl and snap at his dignity—sent a jolt of fire through my veins. I clenched my fists, ready to throw myself into the center of that circle to stand

From what I had heard from the villagers, only 6 of them went to get the tributes. So what changed? Why the hell now had so many of them? 20? 30? No... it looked 45 if I hadn’t counted wrong.

Cadence was crumpled on top of the bed nearby, her head bleeding, her eyes closed, and Gibbon was standing in the doorway of the cage. He didn’t know if he should run in fear or barter with his monster. He may have never seen The Hunger Games, but he had read Frankenstein. Giovani slunk back into the corner of the room, his gun in his hand, and waited to see what Gibbon would do.

Catching the crowd’s judging, puzzled glances, Erik flushed crimson, scooped Rose into his arms, and bolted out. Leona simply cut her hand, looking utterly unbothered, and let a trickle of blood drip into the ceremonial cup. “One blood, one soul. I, Leona Lombardi, swear to love and respect Stellan Norgaard as my mate and Alpha, to support and obey him until death sets us apart.” She passed the dagger to me, and I cut my palm, dripping blood into the cup as I repeated the oath. “I, Stellan Norgaard, swear to love and respect Leona Lombardi as my mate and Luna, to guide and protect her until death sets us apart.”

Lucas was a researcher at the lab, and he had practically risked his life to protect that box all this way. Hans scoffed, "Do not make it sound any worser than it is. It's not as serious as you're making it out to be. Also, I informed you that Winnie scavenged medicine from the pharmacy for everyone. She's putting her life at risk for all of humanity." He stated as his gaze swept over everyone. "Any of you got an issue with that?" The deck fell into complete silence, except for the increasingly frequent thuds of zombies crashing against the barbed wire. Suddenly, a barbed wire snapped with a clang, and a rotting arm reached through.

I know she’s both thinking about the safety of the pack and my own exhaustion level. “The police are on their way to meet Scar where Channing found the dead human. And,” I say looking up to glance at the clock on my office wall, “in just about six hours, Leader Bruno will be here to talk to us and Scar’s parents about their experiences with the undead, so we can have some ideas in place for when Scarlett contacts COWS. You know she’ll want you in on that meeting, too.” That’s another great thing about Scarlett — she recognizes the value that the mate brings to the table.
