She’ll make an interesting first round.” Laughter circled the table like smoke. “First round of what?” I asked, already knowing. Carlton turned toward me with that smile again. “Of the Hunt, of course.” My jaw clenched. The Hunt. A sport where men chased down supernaturals, unarmed, drugged, terrified, for fun. I said as much to my mate. “No,” he explained. “Hunters are human, but they have certain supernatural abilities. They are born with the instinct to kill everything non-human. They don’t live in the grey. They refuse to accept that there are good and evil supernaturals - they simply kill everything that isn’t pure human.”

I track the large male deer about a mile away from the house near the river that feeds the lake. “Nice,” Hanzo links, looking at me and I nod slowly moving in the opposite direction of Hanzo to trap the deer if it bolts. “Ready?” Hanzo questions once we’re both in position giving him a clear line to the neck. I nod lowering myself ready to sprint as Hanzo launches himself onto the deer knocking it down, his teeth instantly going into the animal’s neck. I immediately jump grabbing at the back legs hobbling the kicking deer. Chills run through me when I hear the crunching of bone from Hanzo’s grip.

The hunt wasn’t over. It had only just begun.

Every step felt like walking on thin ice. Suddenly, a loud, static chime echoed through the entire sector. The massive holographic billboards hovering over the central plaza flickered from colorful advertisements to a bright, flashing red alert. High-frequency sirens began to blare from the watchtowers above. I stopped in my tracks, my heart slamming against my ribs as I looked up at the sky. We knew where the General’s house was and which houses to skip, because there would only be women and children there. Usually, I would go straight for my number one. But, in this case, I had to be tactical. Since he’s the general, he will most likely be out there, fighting amongst the soldiers he’s trained. Lukas asked, his eyes widening with curiosity. “Not exactly. More like a bounty hunter.” Lukas grinned, and my cheeks flushed. “A huntress. I like that. No wonder you were able to give me a hard time last night,” he said. “You can’t let big guys like me get the best of you.”

He had a predator to catch. The hunt was on.

He was born with the spirit within him. “Hunters are, as the name suggests. They track down and kill supernatural beings. Though I expect not as much as they once did. Perhaps picking and choosing who lives and who dies. Or perhaps being mated with a spirit of the Stars has clouded his duty enough that he doesn’t hunt anyone,” I say, both hinting at the truth of Rem’s nature but not directly saying anything that his friends wouldn’t already know.
