Je tournai la tête vers le bel inconnu. Je l’observai de plus près et commençai à remarquer des détails que j’avais négligés auparavant. La chaise sur laquelle il était assis — elle semblait petite, mais elle était en or. Ses vêtements somptueux et sa posture — il avait une allure majestueuse. « Il… il est le Roi ? » balbutiai-je à voix basse. « Oui, c’est le Roi, » répondit Daphne. Je tirai Daphne un peu plus près de moi. « Tu veux dire que c’est le Roi des Bêtes ? » « Oui, » répondit-elle. Je me rappelai alors comment l’homme en uniforme s’était adressé à lui plus tôt — « Votre Majesté ». Je me rappelai aussi ses paroles dans la Forêt de la Sorcellerie — les apparences sont trompeuses. C’est fini. Mes jambes devinrent soudainement molles, et je me sentis tomber au sol, aussitôt engloutie par l’abîme des ténèbres.

On n'était pas obligés de laisser Mlle Céleste engager des renégats pour littéralement déchiqueter l'enfant de Luna… » « La louve de Luna est restée endormie depuis le début de sa grossesse, ce qui l'a privée de ses capacités de guérison. Les guérisseurs disent qu'elle pourrait ne pas survivre. » Marcus est devenu froid, mêlé d'impuissance. « Je ne m'attendais pas à ce qu'ils soient aussi brutaux. » « Monte la garde. Assure-toi que les guérisseurs la sauvent. S'il lui arrive quoi que ce soit, ils savent ce qu'ils risquent. C'est tout ce que je peux faire désormais. Plus tard, je lui offrirai toutes les ressources de la meute en guise de compensation. » Les portes du centre de soins se sont refermées lentement, coupant à jamais mon amour pour Marcus.
