She was somewhere around seven or eight, completely absorbed in whatever she was drawing, her tongue pressed to the corner of her mouth in concentration. I lowered myself carefully into a chair near her, mindful of my ribs, and looked at the paper. The drawing was full. Not in a crowded way, in a deliberate way, like she had a clear picture in her head and was working her way across the page with intention. There was a dragon in the top left, red and blocky with impressive teeth. Below it, a woman in a red cape with a pointed hat on a flying broom, carefully coloured with a orange crayon. And that was okay. Today I was helping Micah, a thirteen-year-old with a shaved head, hoodie sleeves always tugged down over their palms, and the eyes of someone who’d seen more than they should’ve. They weren’t chatty, but they liked drawing. Their sketchbook was filled with figures that resembled comic book heroes, quiet and fierce, with eyes always cast in shadow. They were hunched over a new page now, sketching a person standing in the center of swirling chaos. The figure held a long sword in both hands, the blade resting downward, tip touching the ground. Not raised. Not slashing. Just… there.

my father asked quietly. "God, I hope not." My voice cracked. "He's my baby, Dad. I don't know what to do." Lucian padded over, barefoot and grinning, holding up a sketchpad. "Look what I drew!" He flipped it around. A caricature - me with exaggerated sharp jaw and tattoos, my father beside me looking stern and regal, both of us sitting exactly like this by the pool. It was surprisingly good for a thirteen-year-old. "This is the trend now," Lucian announced proudly. "Caricatures. I made one for you guys."

He turned to me with his brown eyes questioning my reaction, "I can draw it better when I am a bigger Haris." "Oh dear." I rubbed my palm on his head, "It's the most beautiful portrait I have ever seen, it is perfect." He threw his arms around me and gave me a big hug before showing us the rest of his drawings. There was one of Me and him, another of Bopha and I, then all of us with Elara, and then the last one was something he shouldn't have drawn but before I could snatch it away, Bopha was faster.

As the creature turned its head, Hao Lo's figure, shrouded in black mist, appeared, holding a purple dagger in both hands. "Dagger art, split the earth!" Crashhh Hao Lo's dagger easily sliced through the right ear of the giant dragon-headed creature. And it didn't stop there; Hao Lo vanished again and reappeared at its left ear. Just like the right ear, the left ear—which resembled a human ear—was also severed by Hao Lo. "Ahhh!" "You're a giant, but you have a dragon's head and human-like ears. Those two ears don't suit you, so I'll just cut them off." Hao Lo said, now standing beside Long Chen.

Glen had drawn the northern woods. A square hatch. Six stick figures. One had a hat. Another had unusually large boots. Each figure carried a different symbol instead of a face. Joel smiled. "Children draw differently." Alex nodded. "No." "He wasn't drawing faces." "He was classifying them." He pointed at the figure with the hat.

Breakfast ended more slowly than I expected. Aurelia insisted on showing me the drawing she'd made after the reception. It consisted mostly of flowers, three smiling stick figures, and what she assured me was a very accurate wolf. "It has four tails," I pointed out. "It was excited." "I see." Kael glanced at the page. "I've never met a wolf with four tails." "You haven't met this one." "I stand corrected." Apparently satisfied, Aurelia folded the drawing with great care before announcing she intended to keep it forever.

Such a childish and girly tantrum. I covered my face. This was truly embarrassing. It was a good thing that I am the only person seeing this. I could not let Lucas know that I have such a habit before! This would be my secret until the day I die! "Mom, look here! I draw myself and mom!" My mother and I looked at the drawing book. There were two stick figures on the paper. The taller stick has long hair and a big smile with very long lashes that expand longer than the ears. I said, ruffling his hair, as his twin returned with a drawing paper. “This is what I drew, mummy. I got it, right. I said drew.” He cheered, to which I smiled, stroking his soft cheeks. “Yes, baby. You did,” I said, collecting the drawing from him. “Now let's see what we have here.” There were four painted figures on the paper; two small ones, who I deduced were Liam and Leo with a slightly taller one with long hair and red lips, who I knew was me and a tall man with short hair.
