A hatch on the underside of the fortress opened. A dozen glowing, violet lights dropped from the hull—hybrids, equipped with gravity-boots, falling straight toward the balcony.
The heat between Zack and Elodie flared as the first hybrid hit the stone railing, its unhinged jaw snapping. Zack shoved Elodie back into the study, his claws extending with a wet, ripping sound.

Elodie scrambled back, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps. She hit the bedroom door and slammed the bolt home. The room was dark, the only light coming from the White Moon glow in her skin.
