But if things went wrong—and knowing my luck, something would—I didn’t want to pull them into the trouble that would follow. My gaze fell on the trashy romance novel sitting on the front seat. It was objectively terrible; bad grammar, weak plotting, and things happened far too easily for the heroine. I’d devoured it in a single night. It was trash, but it was delicious trash. The heroine had auctioned off her virginity to the mafia to pay for her father’s debts and ended up being ‘oversold’ to three brooding Alphas all vying for her attention and favors.

She click-clacked away in her heels. I stayed buried in Jace's arms, breathing in the cedar scent I knew so well. A line of comments flashed through my mind: [WHAT. I'm done. The villainess was supposed to be obsessed with the crown prince. The heroine was supposed to save the kingdom. I was supposed to be a background character, dead before chapter three."
