Her breathing grew uneven. But she said nothing.
"I just want peace," I went on, softer, my eyes dropping to the ground before returning to her. "I just want to live a fucking normal life. No psychotic witch, no zombie wolves, no ancestor trying to use my soul as currency. I’m not anyone’s piece on a board."
The magic inside me surged, vibrant. Warm. The beast, too. For the first time, the two didn’t repel each other. They sang in unison, and I hoped every one of them could feel it, because I was done running.
