"I believe we ended up on the ground because you weren't listening to me," He pointed out.

Julian’s pov The taxi hadn’t yet moved away from the sidewalk when my knees suddenly buckled. I remained standing directly outside the apartment complex looking at the drab brown bricks as if they were meant to support me. Perhaps to steady me. Perhaps to make me sense that I was truly grounded on the soil and not drifting beyond my own frame. However, no solution was effective.

When jumping, I manage to get my entire neck and shoulders above the water.

POV: KAEL I see it and my stomach drops. I freeze with my hand still in the dirt. The earth is wrong. Not dug out. Not torn up like animals fighting. Pressed down. Stepped on. Over and over. A slow circle around the camp. Careful. Clean. Fresh. I straighten slowly. Way too slowly. My heart starts to pound. “No,” I whisper. The ground does not whisper back. It just sits there. Quiet. Watching me.
