I can’t see. “Help!” I scream again, my voice cracking. “Please, help me!”

I can only remember things but I don't think I would be able to pull it off. I started pacing up and down and bitting my nails. There is no other way. I just have to see Blake tonight. So I got no choice. I'll just have to make out through the window. Maybe it won't be so difficult. I won't find out until I try. I went to the window and opened it once more. Looking at the height, I grimaced. Damn. I wish I still had my powers. This would be a piece of cake. I must say though, it refreshing to be human. My powers came with advantages but they are essentially the cause of my pain. If I had a choice in it, I think I would've preferred to be human as well. Now, how to go down.

Her creased eyebrows and the heated flush on her cheeks betray how she feels, and small whimpers occasionally escape from her parted lips, like she’s trying to hide the discomfort within. She’s just a child, and yet she has to go through all of these. “I don’t want you to grow up broken like me,” I mutter, embracing her, shielding her from whatever danger lurks outside this elevator. I’ve been thinking about the times when I feel down and that little voice—so soothing to my ears, reminds me as such. Right now, I’ve been reminded of my daily ponders. What if…what if…now is the right time to do it? I can’t go back to the human border and I’m certain the wolves can easily capture us anytime..

And it scares the hell out of me because I can’t remember the last time I let anyone get this close, let anyone see the man behind the mask. “I wish I could see you,” she whispers, and I can hear the longing in her voice. I open my eyes, staring at the ceiling as I try to compose myself. “What do you see?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

“I know, I just… I don’t know if I can be like you.” Travian’s lips twitched, the faintest smile etched across the ruin of his face. “You’re not supposed to be like me.” His bruised eyes softened, carrying warmth even through the pain. “You’re supposed to be better. Better than me. And I believe you can. Even when you don’t believe it yourself.”

Willow wasn't just our manager. She was also George's wife. With her vouching for me, everyone fell into a tense silence. In my previous life, I hadn't been able to make out what was on the screen. This time, I wasted no time. I scrolled through the footage frame by frame. Even though it was nighttime, the ATM lights were still bright. Under the clear, almost daylight-like glow, my face was unmistakably visible. No matter how I looked at it, the person in the footage was undeniably me.

I was sure that little human saw me healing yesterday, as she looked shocked with that dog, but meh, she didn't ask anything today, which should be a good thing for me. "Besides, there's no point in talking to her, Nicholas. She's just like everyone else, growing old soon and dying. When you come back from the far Olympics, she will have moved up a grade or even be married. Unlike you, who live this boring life and struggle with the same thoughts," I told myself, as my breath started to get a bit tight. I don't know why, but sometimes I also wonder. Since I'm no longer human and have inhuman healing speed…Shouldn't I be 100% healthy? Why do I still have this disease?

Levi’s hand moved to my shoulder, his thumb tracing the fabric over the scar. "The venom of a werewolf is fatal to humans," he explained, his voice gentle. "It burns through the system, destroys the organs. You should have died in that alley, Maya. Or, in very rare cases, you should have turned." "I didn't turn," I whispered. "I'm human." "I know," Levi said, looking puzzled. "You didn't die. And you didn't turn. You... survived. You absorbed the venom and stayed human." "So?" "So," Levi leaned his forehead against mine. "That shouldn't be possible. Unless..."

The heavy door of the cryopod slammed shut right in front of my face. Freezing mist instantly enveloped me, blurring everything outside into a hazy smear. I pounded on the reinforced door with all my might until my palms turned bright red from the impact. "Dad! Mom! I didn't mean to! I'll never do it again!" I screamed. "Please, let me out!" Mom's voice cut through the thick walls of the pod. "Oh, now you're sorry? Too late!" she snapped. "Beckett has a fragile constitution. His immune system is much weaker than yours. You stole his high-energy nutrient meals. Were you trying to kill him? You're going to stay in there and think about what you've done!"
