Rain still beat against the glass. But I wasn’t on the street anymore. I was in my apartment. In my room. In my bed. I was twenty-three. I had a job. I had a roof. I had survived. “You survived.” I whispered to myself, and the words were my shield. “You survived. You’re here. You’re alive.” I looked around the room, confirming reality. The dresser with the crooked drawer. The lamp with the broken shade. The chair where I threw used clothes.

I will run, and I will hide. I will survive.

Her words were brave and defiant, but I knew she was sacrificing herself to save me. The stairs seemed to go on forever. My legs shook with exhaustion and terror, but I kept climbing. When I finally reached the top, I found myself in a maintenance area behind the subway platform. Commuters moved past the chain-link fence, completely unaware that a war was being fought beneath their feet.

I stood there for a moment, watching his back disappear down the hall. It felt sorted, not healed, not fixed, but sorted enough to breathe. I turned and walked back to my room. Inside, I locked the door and leaned against it. My knees felt weak. I slid down to the floor, pressing my palms over my face. “I am still here.” I whispered to myself. “I survived it.” I showered slowly, letting warm water run over my shoulders. I changed into clean clothes, simple ones. When I opened the window, the night air felt cold, but it didn’t scare me.

Then his knees buckled, and I caught him before he fell. “It’s over,” I said softly. “You’re safe.” He clung to me, shaking. “That was… real. All of it.” “Yes.” “And we survived.” “Yes,” I said again. “Because you listened. Because you trusted me. And because you fought.” His voice broke. “I thought I lost you.” “You won’t,” I said firmly. “Not today. Not ever.” I pressed my forehead against his, letting him breathe. He was terrified—but alive. And stronger now than he had been an hour ago.

The emergency coordinator was moving toward me, clipboard in hand, questions already forming. I straightened. Rolled my shoulders back. I had survived the landing. That didn't mean I was safe.

I ask, pulling away from Sky and yawning. “Yes, we can go to bed.” Chuckling, I slowly climb off his lap and stand, stretching as I do so. Sky takes my hand when I am done and we make our way back towards the Palace. What ever is about to be thrown at me because of Juden and his me, I will take it in strides. I survived his assassination attempt fourteen years ago, survived the Slums and Prison. Hell, I just survived being poisoned. I am a survivor and if there is one thing I know how to do it’s fight to survive.

Even if I still wasn’t sure how I was going to stand up in front of them all and be what they needed me to be. We would show them what resilience looked like. What survival looked like. What rebuilding could be. Because if four tiny hearts could keep beating after everything they'd endured, then I could stand before a crowd and tell our story. That night, the silence in the house felt louder than it had in weeks. I stood by the window, arms crossed over my chest, watching the moon hang heavy and bright in the sky.
