No one was there. “Hello?” I whispered. You don’t need to whisper. The voice was calm. Not scary. It sounded… close. Like it came from inside my head. “Who said that?” I asked, my voice shaking a little. I did. My name is Gerry. I blinked. “Gerry?” Yes. I am your wolf. My mouth fell open. “My… wolf?” I repeated. I knew about wolves. Everyone did. We were werewolves. We shifted when we were older. Way older. I was only five. Everyone said I wouldn’t feel my wolf until I was at least eighteen.

The crackling sound was horrifying. I was the weakest, the tiniest in the pack. At sixteen, I couldn’t even call myself a werewolf as I hadn’t shifted yet, which always got me bullied. Tears blurred my eyes. Thick smoke began suffocating my lungs, making it hard to breathe. Sweat covered my whole body as heat seemingly slowly melted my skin.

My mom said I shifted into a werewolf for the first time on my eighteenth birthday. I was so scared and confused when it happened. I had no idea werewolves existed. I woke up in the woods naked and afraid. I went home and told my mom what happened. That was when she told me the truth about who my father really was.

“Maia, if you’re not walking out the front door with me in five minutes then I’m leaving you behind!” Adrian yelled from the other side of our apartment. “The one time we’re running behind instead of him” Celeste grumbled in my head. I had been paired with my wolf, Celeste, when I turned 15 years old. As most werewolves complete their first shift when they’re around 12, I was quite the late bloomer, and had doubts that I even had a wolf. My first shift was challenging, usually you’re guided through it by your parents, but I was completely alone and had no one but the new stranger in my head offering words of encouragement.

I feel the awkward silence taking over the room. Werewolves won’t understand this feeling. They get their wolves when they go through puberty. I remember when Yaya and I got our wolves. We were twelve years old. I was so awkward; my limbs outgrew my torso, and I was clumsy. Yaya was always gorgeous. The boys in our pack admired her. I was the weirdo twin brother who could make cool potions. When we got our wolves, our dad was so proud. He and Mom weren’t sure if we would get wolves since we'd had magic capabilities since birth.

To them I am a burden, my life is not something to be celebrated, my presence is merely endured. Today marks my eighteenth birthday, a sacred day in the life of every young werewolf. In the early hours of this morning, whilst the full, blue moon was still hanging in the sky above the forest, I shifted into my wolf form for the first time and the true nature of my being was finally set free.

That thought was triggered by the rosary on my bedside that I’d just picked up to examine, to remember the day I’d met Kai and the fact that I’d forever be indebted to him. When I was a teenager, I lived among humans because I was confused and roaming from one orphanage to another to find a family that would accept me. The last orphanage I was at belonged to a catholic church and the priest caught whiff of the fact that I was a slowly maturing werewolf before I did.

I whined for the millionth time as we unloaded the truck and carried the box in our new house. My mother the genius thought it was a good idea for us to move back into her home town after my 16th birthday. My 16th was quite and event, I discovered I was a wolf and turned for the first time. To make matters worse, my mother told me I wasn’t only a wolf but I was also part of the witch clan, so the surprises were not going to end there, my wolf had fully matured but the witch part of me hadn’t matured yet.

Whenever she explained anything to me, then I would always nod. I thought she just lived here alone so she would cook and clean the house by herself. But it turns out that she has a few disciples who come in turn to help her. This time it was a pair of teenagers with healthy bodies and very friendly faces. When they saw me, they would smile. "Well, are you going to cry?" asked my wolf. My fingers moved. "No." "You're lying." I wiped the snot out of my nose. "This is the first time we've been treated like werewolves by others. Usually, we're treated like trash and jinxes."

who am I kidding? I didn't come to where I am today through unicorns and rainbows. I killed countless rogues and wiped out anything and everything that dared to challenge me. To become the alpha, I even murdered every single one of past high ranked officers of my pack and expelled their families ruthlessly when I first shifted into my wolf at sixteen!! And I even scattered previous alpha- my uncle's limbs all around the pack border just to make a point that I wasn't someone to be trifled with even though I was young and newly shifted.
