So this was the end of my miserable life. After trying to be perfect for my family, trying to be perfect for the world, this was how I ended. Anna, a perfect daughter, skilled in fencing. She was the only child of a rich family. She was raised to show perfection in everything she did. She had to smile even when she was crying inside. She hated her life. She promised herself that she would one day escape and go live in the countryside quietly and peacefully, alone and far away from her father and stepmother.

“I want you to be my daddy, and Miss Naomi to be my mommy.” She said it with the surety and innocence of a child’s mind. Fuck! Why did it sound so good? Mama Naomi, Daddy Rip, and their little Princess Becky. The perfect little family. My perfect little family. I cleared my throat as I hugged her tightly. Our perfect little family. And just like that, everything I shouldn’t want but did came back with a vengeance. It would be so easy to just give in and claim both of them as mine. One as my partner, and the other, the daughter I always wanted, but had never been lucky enough to have. I swallowed hard. It wouldn’t be just ‘so easy’ to give in. It would be too easy…

I should’ve known the love we shared was too intense to just fade away with time and distance apart. I thought I was doing the right thing. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. From the moment we lost Luke and Logan, I tried stepping up to be the perfect daughter. My parents had already lost two children—the golden boys of the family—and I never wanted them to have to worry about me. I wanted to make sure I never gave them trouble. I wanted to make things easy on them.

At one point in time I wished I had more but as I grew up I realized I was okay with it like this. Although there were a few people missing in my life but that's how life was. If that meant portraying myself as the perfect daughter or perfect family- even though no family is, I'd still do it. As crazy as my life was, I didn't want to let anybody down. They didn’t. “Good isn’t enough,” I muttered, tapping my pen against the desk. “It has to be perfect. If I slip up once, even slightly, they’ll rip me apart. They’re all waiting for me to fail.” She shut the folder with a sharp snap, making me jump. “Perfection is impossible. But this? This is close enough that your dad would’ve been proud.” The mention of Dad made my throat tighten. I looked away quickly, pretending to shuffle papers. “Don’t,” I whispered.

It was barely audible to those standing at a distance. She sat beside the tombstone wearily with her body slouched against it. Ivanka bit her lip. “I hate that I can’t eradicate them right now to avenge you. I know you wouldn’t want me to engage in self-destruction with them, but Dad, I’m sorry, I can’t do it your way. I can’t bear to let them live happily after what they’ve done to you. Even if I can’t kill them, I’ll make them wish they were dead. “I haven’t been a good daughter, as I couldn’t care for you until you grew old or fulfil your wishes. But I still hope you can visit me in my dreams, Dad. When will you visit me in my dream?

"Father, I've loved him since the moment I set my eyes on him. I'm sure as anything." "Then I guess that's solved, then," he says wistfully. "I want you to be happy, always. I don't want you to try and be perfect even when it causes a disservice to yourself. I was never a perfect son, so I don't expect a perfect daughter." I'm too stunned to speak. I just start crying. Again. "Thank you so much, Dad. I love you." "I love you too, sweetheart. And I'm sure no other man would treat you better than Max. He's a good man. A good friend. she asked expectantly. “I don’t think that’s what your father would want” he absent-mindedly said. “I know. But I want to be strong, like Linda. Or compassionate like Sylvia. I made sure my father won’t be able to get a hold of her after I’m gone. “God don’t talk like that. To be honest I didn’t like you much too, I thought you were the best friend in love with their best friend. You know the cliché of every romance book known to man. Then I got to know you, really know you and I’m glad to have met you. You’re a wonderful human being, an amazing mother, friend and wife. Even if you don’t get the recognition you deserve.” Tears run down my face, for the first time in a very long time, I wish things were different. That I wasn’t given the short end of the stick. That I could watch my daughter grow old, see her get married, have children of her own.
