[ Scarlett POV ] There is a specific kind of silence that settles over a room full of athletes when they've collectively decided to wait for you to fail. I'd grown up inside that silence. I'd learned to skate in it, learned to read the ice through it, learned to locate exactly where it lived in my body, just below my shoulder blades, a tightening that I breathed through until it became nothing, just air, just background. I'd been doing it since I was the only girl at my first hockey camp at age nine and every boy in my group had looked at me with that same particular expression: patient, almost kind, absolutely certain.

I slid into my seat at the back, ignored the snickering from the hockey twins up front, and focused on not crying into my binder. I kept touching my face—checking for smudges, stray makeup, anything that might make me more of a target than I already was. No one spoke to me. They never did.

"Got identification?" The woman behind the glass didn't look up, her gaze fixed on the ledger through spectacles perched precariously on her nose. "Right here. Grab the sign, Camila," Isaac said, shoving the massive glitter-crusted board into his friend's hands. He dug through his clear, regulation-size bag—a lesson learned the hard way after being turned away from a San Antonio Ice Arena match years ago. He flipped his wallet open, pressing his ID against the glass. "Isaac Corres. I should be on the list."

Dozens of pages. His grandfather had documented everything. He flipped through them quickly until something caught his eye. One page had been torn out. Cleanly. Deliberately. The old woman's words hung in the air long after she said them. "The Bride of the Ninth Life has returned." Nobody moved. Not Kai, Not Draven, Not even the servant. The whole courtyard had turned to stone around me, and I stood in the middle of it, shaking, with no idea why a stranger kneeling on cold marble made me feel like the ground had opened under my feet.
