I listened to the tick of the clock, staring at the picture on the bedside table, of the six-year-old kid with his arms wrapped around his father's shoulders.
The missing toothy smile, flushed cheeks in the snow, our home in the background, and in front of us, demanding we smiled for the camera, was Mum.
That kid... I didn’t remember him anymore. But I knew he grew up, and right now, he lay on the bed, unwilling to breathe too deeply so the pain wouldn’t shoot up like fireworks.
Every part of me hurt, especially the split lip and my midsection, but nothing more than the ache in my chest.
