The expensive coffee shops and new apartment buildings faded into older neighborhoods, strip malls, and eventually a commercial stretch with worn out pavement and faded street signs. Roselle watched out the window, occasionally guessing where we were going. She guessed a diner, a movie theater, and a bowling alley. I just kept driving. I finally pulled into a large, poorly lit parking lot. At the far end of the lot sat a wide, rectangular building with a corrugated metal roof. Ice explained. “Will you be playing 004?” Ice nodded quickly. “Most likely.” “But doesn’t he already know your face from when he visited the club? And why does he need to wear such a half-mask?” Jacob asked, recalling Lucas’s use of a mask. “Yes, he knows. But I can use a disguise. So far, I’m the one who knows him better. He uses the mask to cover a scar left by Cassius.” Ice glanced at Jacob, who frowned.

“Ice cream for you.” One of Isabella’s eyebrows shot up. “Do you think I’m a child?” “Everyone loves ice cream, especially when they’re bored, angry, and... jealous.” Nicholas offered the ice cream again. “You can take this. One for you, one for me.” After a moment of consideration, Isabella took the ice cream from Nicholas and raised it in the air. “You’re right. Jason glared at Icy and spoke in exasperation. Icy giggled and turned to Ava. "Hello, sister, my name is Icy White," Icy stretched out her hand to Ava and said. "Ava White." Ava gently stretched another hand. Her expression was cold as ice. Looking at this icy face, Icy felt chills in her heart for no reason. She instantly lost all enthusiasm to befriend icy, feeling that she was too unapproachable.

Lincoln chuckled and took slow steps closer to the cliff. “Careful, it can be slippery.” He warned as he climbed over one of the boulders to get to the first cave. “They call it the ice caves, because every winter they freeze solid. Humans come from all over to make the trek to see it. They never freeze the same way twice, so each year it looks different.” He wedged his foot onto a flat part of the stone and lifted himself higher up. “You can hide in the caves behind them, but you might get wet.” He helped her climb up next to him so they were both huddled behind the waterfall. “Why have I never heard of these before?” She asked as she watched the water shift in the wind. Lincoln shrugged.

I get up, pull on gear without fully deciding to and walk to the rink. The ice at five-forty in the morning is a specific thing. The lights on half-power, the refrigeration hum, the cold that hits your face at the entrance and reminds you immediately that this is a real place and you are a real person in it. I lace up alone on the bench, no rush, nobody waiting, just the sound of the empty building around me. I step onto the ice.
