Just the low hum of tension that clung to me like a second skin. I pulled away, rubbing my temples. My stomach churned, a knot of dread and frustration tangling tighter by the second. I turned to the sink and twisted the cold tap. Water gushed out, startlingly loud in the silence. I cupped it in my hands and splashed it onto my face. Once. Twice. Again. The cold burned against my skin, a small mercy, a distraction from the thoughts clawing at the inside of my head. Calm down, I told myself. Just breathe. It’s not what you think.

Payne approved. Melinda watched in horror as Edmund smacked Collins across his face. She yelped when he followed that up with a fist into his nose. All that time, Collins didn't take his eyes off her. She stilled her lips not to quaver as tears blurred her vision. She continued sawing behind her, begging Collins silently to hold on. I called and texted her since she left but she hasn't returned any of my calls or texts and that's fine because I know I hurt her but nothing feels thesame without her. The flyers scattered from his hand. He turned and tried to move away on his bad leg. "Wade." He stopped. His whole body shook once. He turned back slowly, his eyes full of fear, shame, and something that looked like the end of a very long road.

My pace slowed as my vision began to blur. My mom was getting something out of the oven. When she stood straight up, she hit the handle of one of the pots, flipping its contents and wasting it all over her arm, hand, and face. I could hear her piercing scream as her skin instantly began to bubble.
