Duke turned his head slightly, and for the first time, the calm slipped — not gone, just… pulled tight like a mask cracking. “Careful,” he said softly. “Truth spoken in my domain carries consequences.”
“Then let them come.” My pulse thundered, but I didn’t step back. “If you wanted obedience, you should’ve chosen someone else.”
He studied me — not with rage, but with something far worse: fascination. “And yet here you are,” he murmured. “Shaking, but unbroken. I see now why he wanted you.”
