If I hadn’t heard and read about his world before, I would’ve thought he was insane. “So…” he said softly, “why were you crying?” “A lot has happened,” I admitted. “But mainly…I came here to reclaim my position. This party was supposed to be my spotlight. The comeback of the Midnight Ballerina.” He froze. Literally froze. “Wait,” he said sharply. “You’re…the Midnight Ballerina?” I nodded. He ran both hands over his face. “You’re kidding. You have to be kidding. Cierra! oh my God! this is insane.”

"You’re not even trying, are you?" The dummy didn’t answer, of course, but in my mind, I imagined it rolling its eyes—if it had eyes at all. I sighed again, looking down at the practice partner in my arms. "This is so embarrassing. I can’t even get through one turn without tripping over myself. What are they going to think of me at the Moonlit Ball? I can barely manage the steps here, in this empty hall!" I shifted it slightly, as though repositioning it, and continued my tirade in a softer, almost whiny tone. "Honestly, if you would just cooperate, this might go a lot smoother. It’s not all my fault, right?"

Maybe it was another apology for her past mockery, or perhaps it was for her helplessness in the face of my terrible experiences. I stood in front of Mia and hugged her. "Emily was wrong about one thing. I'm not worthless to Alex or anyone else. To Damien, I'm just a ballerina who uses ballet to flirt. Dancing ballet has become both a joy and a cruelty for me." After releasing her, I turned and walked toward the lockers. I realized I wasn't fit to be here right now. "Today might not be a good day for rehearsal. Let's both go home and get some rest, Mia."

I did all these girly things with my mom beforehand like getting out nails done and our hair. I loved being so pampered. I was 14, and it just felt like a magical night. At that age, as a beta, I had been spending most my time training. Both my parents were very into that, so to do something different was really nice.”

I said and forced a smile. I turned my back on them, but I could still hear them. “Who is she?” “Kylo Morris.” “Is she that good? I never notice her.” “It was beginner’s luck.” I stopped when the ball rolled in front of me. I picked it up and faced the ring. That time, I was farther. I could feel their eyes on me, but who cares? I threw the ball, and it went straight on the spot. Once again, they couldn’t believe their eyes.

He tenses up. "Uh, sure..." He replies, looking nervous as fuck. "Let's get this over with," I mumble, picking up a basketball and bouncing it a few times. All the boys take their positions on the other half of the field, and I just focus on the basket. What these boys don't know, is that I'm a great shooter. I can literally shoot from the other end of the field. So the joke's on 'Gabe'; I'm totally shooting in less than a minute.
