She pretended not to notice the room, but really, she was somewhere else—buried in her tablet, picking apart a file, piece by piece. Numbers. Records. Patterns. “I’ll walk you up.” We meet at the front of the truck, and he falls into step beside me. The night air is cool, quiet, almost peaceful. For the first time in days, I feel like I can breathe. We stop at the bottom of the porch steps. And suddenly the space between us feels charged, not heavy, not overwhelming, just… full. Like something is about to happen. His hand lifts slightly, like he’s about to brush a strand of hair behind my ear again. I lean in without meaning to. He leans in too. We’re inches apart. And then...The front door swings open. She perched herself on my table and batted her eyelashes. Time for some fucking fun. This event is not in continuation with the novel. This does not happen after Chapter Thirty. You can imagine this to have happened somewhere between Chapter Twenty Five and Chapter Twenty Nine.

Chapter 50: Halfway to Becoming Whole Sophia stared at the top of the document, her fingers hovering over the keys like they were waiting for her to finally make peace with herself. The cursor blinked, as patient as ever, underneath a title that had taken her a full week to type: Chapter 10: The Day the Mirror Told the Truth.

The title page and table of contents looks normal, but I keep flipping pages to get to chapter one. Two more pages and I’m staring at the first chapter, titled “Finding a Companion.” I almost missed the title completely because my eyes were drawn to the center of the page where there was a rectangular shaped wooden box. All the pages had been cut through the center to fit this box inside, and there was something carved into the box. It was an image of the compass rose and the words “You’re My True North.” I glance back up to the first sentence of the chapter and it reads, “When preparing for an adventure, the first, and possibly most important, decision is who you will choose as your comp
