I would be even more excited if it was our Queen's beautiful sister. While I adore our Queen, there is something about her witch sister that gave me wrong fantasies every night. Even when our Queen is laying by my side, I had wrong imaginations involving her sister. I hate myself for it, but the witch's eyes are just hard to forget in a short while. "You can go first. Just don't kill it," I say to Parish.

I whispered to the empty room. The fire cracked, as if answering. But I pushed the thought away. Jealousy was a weak man’s shadow, and I was no weakling. Still… the image of them clung to me, even here, far from North Creek. I stood, pulling my cloak tighter. My people would expect me at council by dawn. Life went on. But deep inside, I carried the truth: my sister had built a new world, one I could never fully step into. And though I had told her I wanted nothing more… a part of me wondered if that was a lie. The fire snapped again, throwing sparks up the chimney. I had drifted deep into my own thoughts, so far that the sound of boots in the hall pulled me back sharp.

That was what Maryan thought of her sister until that fateful night. Maryan overslept at the bus that she had missed her stop. To Lexi, it felt like she closed her eyes for a long time, but when she opened them, Sandra was on the ground, and next to her was Margie who was also writhing in pain. This countdown is what keeps me going every day. It’s going so well but as I sit there looking forward, I see several shadows fall in front of me. That feeling of hope for a good day disappeared in an instant. I counted three shadows which meant I knew exactly who was stood there. My sister Ella, her two best friends Gemma and Leah. Or as I liked to refer to them the Bitches of Eastwick. Not witches. Witches were cool. These three were straight up evil.

I couldn’t see their face clearly. But I could feel it. Danger. My sister stepped slightly in front of me again. “Who are you?” she asked. The figure didn’t answer. They just kept walking closer. My chest tightened. I grabbed my sister’s arm. “Let’s go back,” I whispered urgently.

The anger I felt immediately subsided when I saw the sadness in his eyes. Fuck! I messed this up big time, of course, Lincoln doesn't want to be an alpha. If there's one person who knows why Lincoln despises the idea of being an alpha, then it's me and I am such a prick for telling him to step up and be the alpha instead. "I'm sorry," I sincerely apologize to my brother. "It's okay, Michael," Lincoln replied and sparingly smiled at me. I just took a deep breath as I turned on the engine again and start driving, there is a deafening silence between us as we were on our way back to the pack house.

The voice didn’t echo—it reverberated inside me, brushing against bone, threading through memories. I turned slowly. The shadows moved—no, shaped. They weren’t empty. And then she stepped forward. My mirror. My sister. She looked just like me—but wrong, uncanny. Like a painting smudged just slightly out of alignment. Where mine were golden, hers were pitch black twin black holes digesting the shadowy light. Her skin is white, almost transparent and her lips curl into a half smile, not evil but that is not good either. “You came,” she said, voice soft and echoing. “You finally heard me.”

I was certain of it. They had come too far to turn around now. The situation surrounding her family was deteriorating by the day, and every hour wasted narrowed her options. There was no time to waste and she was treading on dangerous territory. Soon, this contract would be the only thing standing between them and complete ruin. She knew that. And I knew it better than anyone. I rose from my chair and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. The skyline glittered under the afternoon sun, sharp and untouchable.
