A shadow fell across my desk, and I looked up, my breath catching. Syrn. My eldest sister stood in the doorway, her presence as sharp and chilling as a winter wind. There was no greeting, no polite inquiry. Her eyes, the same shade of glacial blue as mine, narrowed as they raked across my face.
“So, you’re finally back,” she said, her voice a low, dangerous growl. “And you’ve brought a stray with you.”
I put the report down, slowly, deliberately. “Syrn.” My voice was calm, I hoped, a stark contrast to the thrumming tension in the room. “It’s good to see you. How was your journey?”
