The leaves that were brown and should have crunched underfoot remained whole. The Maiden walked above it all for a while but then, between one step and another, her feet connected to the ground.

Wendy runs ahead, balancing on fallen logs, collecting pebbles, pretending sticks are swords and the forest is under attack by invisible monsters. Mia and I walk slowly, hand in hand. Sometimes in silence, sometimes trading soft words. We laugh when Wendy finds a squirrel and tries to make it her “woodland sidekick.” We pick wildflowers, skip stones by the stream, and lie on a blanket in a clearing to watch the clouds.
