I’d escaped King Leonidas pack. I was out here with Finn but he was nowhere to be seen. Where had he gone to? Did he leave? He seemed determined to take me back to my pack. Quietly, I got to my feet. The night birds were responsible for the sounds that I could hear. I walked along the path he had taken earlier. It was a wide path and I noticed the footprints. I followed, staying as silent as possible and then my ears heard it. Voices. They were unclear and drawing too close would reveal my presence.

Fear crept up her spine like cold fingers. Aurora turned to head back to safety. But as she walked, she could hear footsteps behind her. Someone was following her through the trees. Aurora started walking faster. The footsteps behind her matched her pace. Aurora broke into a run. Branches grabbed at her dress and scratched her arms. Behind her, the footsteps were getting closer. Aurora's foot caught on a root and she fell hard to the ground. Pain shot through her knee where she hit a rock.

He returned 30 minutes later. He pulled out his phone. “Found these near camp.” Pictures. At first, I nearly laughed. Footprints. They looked absurdly tiny. Delicate impressions pressed into mud and pine needles. The kind a child might make. Or a very small woman. Then— Nothing. The footprints just stopped. As if the owner vanished mid-step. Cade leaned closer over my shoulder. “Where…” River looked at his brother, “Exactly what I thought.” More photos. The same tiny footprints circling campsites repeatedly.

After dressing myself, I stepped out into the quiet morning, the dewy grass tickling my bare feet as I walked around the backyard for some fresh air. Then, I saw them. Footprints, much larger than any mere animal’s, indented deeply into the soft grass. There was something strange about those footprints, too; there were only three. They were haphazard and out of rhythm, as though the creature that left them had been limping. My heart quickened as I followed them, my breath hitching in my throat when I suddenly spotted a tuft of dark fur caught on the low branches of a nearby shrub.

“I’ll lead them away from you, alright?” I nodded. “Thank you, Cal. I’ll see you in the car.” With a pat on his back, I secured the bag on my shoulder, following the path to the right like Calvin instructed. As I took each step, my hands traced the walls of the mansion to guide me. The earthy ground where my feet take a hushed pace feels as if they’re marshmallows melting.

The heavy footsteps of their pursuers closing in was heard in the bushes. As they made their way down a steep hill, Aurora's feet stumbled on a protruding root, and she lost her footing. She tried to regain her balance, but the slope was too steep, and her momentum carried her forward. She tripped and tumbled down the hill, her body rolling over rocks and branches, her arms flailing in a desperate attempt to stop herself.

It was all about feeling invincible, even for a brief moment in your life. On that day, while I was sleeping on Leah's lap, I felt exactly the same thing. I was flying in the wind before falling down into the bed of clouds. I was walking, or to be more specific, bouncing in the air. When I looked back, I saw for every step I took on the marshmallow-like cloud, I left a footprint. But then, I saw another line of footprints beside mine. Like blossoms spreading on the snow, those footprints were twice the size as mine, with oval-shaped middle pads and spiky toenails.
