With what we had just done, most people would be unconscious. Sedated by pleasure. Spent beyond recovery. And here I was, propped up on my elbow at three in the morning with wide eyes and a pulse that refused to calm down. “I have insomnia,” I admitted. “That’s why.” His expression shifted, something easing at the edges. “Insomnia, huh.” He stood, running a hand through his hair. “Still, I thought I had the magic touch.”

And I was left with nothing but the bitter taste of failure in my throat and the shadow of Caisen's touch still on my skin. I didn't go to Lucian's mansion. I crashed there. If you can call it that. Three pills under my tongue. Swallowed dry. That's what it takes these days—just to shut down. I had insomnia for years. Sleep isn't something I drift into. It's something I fight for, claw at, poison myself into. Without the pills, I'd lie there for hours—wide-eyed and restless—watching the shadows move across the ceiling like they know what I did. Like they remember.

Then, a low, agonizing groan that was definitely not about his lumbar region. "You know I can't stop imagining it..." he whispered, "My brain just runs the tape. Over and over. Every time you breathe, I see the blood." I closed my eyes, pulling the blanket higher. He wasn't complaining about furniture anymore. "Good," I whispered back into the darkness. "Now you know what insomnia feels like." I heard the distinct sound of a massive body shifting. I held my breath, waiting for him to move, waiting for the boundary to break.

He was so shocked that his eyes widened. … The flames blazed throughout the entire night. Stephen only woke up the next morning. He had slept deeply through the whole night. His head felt a little heavy when he woke up. He looked out of the window to see the sun shining brightly. He immediately realized something was wrong. He quickly sat up and got out of bed. He slept deeply, like he had passed out. Yvonne must have spiked the milk!

I had been so desperate to sleep that I pulled out the magical histories textbook. Instead of helping my insomnia, its stories of goblins and other creatures and even the word nightmares came from a demonic fae spirit made sleep impossible. Is that what had happened to me? Except, it wasn't a bad dream, just really steaming hot. And I am dating Lance, not some illusion. I don't belong here. The sooner everyone realizes what I know, the better.
