I then head to the pool where I have a cocktail to unwind before I head up to bed at eleven. Everything in my life, personal and professional, runs according to a very strict schedule and set of routines. I can set my clock to it. Tonight, however, I allow Mara to tell Gregory his story while I stand outside his bedroom and shamelessly listen it. It’s a story about a young man who has to go on a series of adventures to save his family from an evil witch. I smile. The story might be a little too grown up for Gregory to fully understand, but Mara is inexperienced, and Greg is transfixed.

"You know the rules. Bedtime is bedtime. And besides, they probably want to have some grown-up talk." "What do grown-ups talk about?" I think for a second, then grin down at him. "Taxes," I say. "And their boring, boring jobs." Brandon wrinkles his nose in distaste. "Ugh." "Yeah, it's terrible," I say with a mock sigh, "but you have to do it, when you're a grown-up. Luckily for you, you're still a kid. So we don't have to talk about mortgages, and instead, I get to tell you a bedtime story. How's that sound?"

The stories she shared with Theo were not just bedtime rituals—they were a bond that transcended the ordinary, a thread woven with love, creativity, and the boundless beauty of the human spirit. In the soft embrace of the dreamscape, Mama Hazel's heart swelled with love and wonder. The night was a sanctuary where dreams took flight, where stories whispered their secrets, and where the echo of imagination danced in the shadows. Here, in this world of dreams, she found solace, joy, and the eternal promise of stories yet to be told.

I said, "Like we've said. When what they're doing is forbidden, it makes the story even better." "Right," Jennifer said. She was already engrossed in another story. My phone buzzed a moment later. Another brother/sister tale. For a moment, I paused. Was this really appropriate? Had we crossed the line? Five minutes later, I was too busy reading the story to care. *

We don’t talk about amounts in front of her. But she knows, in her small way, that our family doesn’t just live off stories; we pay some of them forward. Eventually, bedtime wins. Dante takes her upstairs, narrating some ridiculous story about a dino‑submarine and a princess with a guitar. I close my laptop, rinse the bowl, and wipe a smear of cheese off the marble. Mundane motions. Miraculous, if I think about the girl I used to be. I lean against the counter and stare out the window at the dark curve of the garden.

I can not hear it very clear but there are some instances that he yawn after talking. "I can not sleep," I answered him shortly. With that sentences, my father already knows what to do. Just like what he is doing when I was still a young girl, he tell me great bed time stories then later on sing for me to sleep. This time, he said to me the story about a girl who is always looking in the positive side of each story even if her life is full of mess. "Father?" I called his attention after he finished the story. [Yes?]

Surprisingly, the man had agreed to my daughter’s request without a hint of hesitation and the pair of us had laid down on either side of Abby. He indulged in her next request with a bedtime story, albeit a rather peculiar one. I had expected a fairy tale along the lines of Little Red Riding Hood or Sleeping Beauty, but his tale was about a werewolf. Not the most appropriate story for inducing a sleepy child, but Abby was listening with wide, fascinated eyes, so my mouth remained shut on the matter. Well, those eyes were wide about five minutes ago. Now, her eyelids slowly blinked up and down while she crashed from the exciting and scary events of the day. Soren’s voice resonated in low tone

The soft hum of machines became a lullaby in the quiet space. Ethan sat by Lucas’s bed, his voice low and soothing as he told him a bedtime story. It was one of Lucas’s favorites—a tale about a brave little fox who outsmarted a big, scary wolf. Lucas clung to every word, his eyes wide with wonder as Ethan brought the characters to life. For a moment, I allowed myself to get lost in the scene. The warmth of Ethan’s voice, the gentle rise and fall of Lucas’s breathing—it felt like a snapshot from a life that could’ve been ours if things had been different.

The next day at work felt like absolute torture. I was the manager of Velvet Desires, an upscale adult store located in a quiet corner of the city. We sold high-end toys, luxurious lingerie, premium lubes, and everything a woman could possibly want to explore her deepest fantasies. Normally I loved my job. I helped shy customers find their first vibrator, recommended the perfect bullet for discreet public play, and smiled through awkward conversations with complete confidence. Today, however, I could barely concentrate on anything.

“I made extra coffee. You look like you need it. Rough night?” I swallowed hard and tried to act normal, sliding onto one of the bar stools at the counter. “Yeah… just had a weird dream.” She laughed lightly and started talking about her plans for the day — something about work and how her boss was being annoying. I nodded along, but I couldn’t focus on a single word.
