THE KEEPER OF STARS The bronze door closed behind them with a deep, echoing thud. For a moment... No one spoke. The circular library seemed untouched by time. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves curved around the room. Ancient star charts covered the walls. A massive telescope extended through the domed ceiling toward the night sky. The fire crackled softly. The warmth was almost shocking after hours in the freezing mountain air. Emilia Varga stood quietly beside the fireplace.

The wind blew colder, and it shielded me from it. I was waiting for Tina on the balustrades adjacent the prayer hall. I was facing the quiet garth, instead of the crowded corridor, so I had the view of the sky that was partly hidden by the towering roof of the convent. A flock of pigeons flew by, and it was followed by something that abruptly covered my view. It was a book. My hands were swift on it. It had no false cover this time, that I could see the illustration of glinting constellations on an unlit horizon of nothingness.

That was in fact, the illusion: the tops of the bookshelves were constructed to branch into the vaulted ceiling, wide paneling covering like a darkened canopy.

The journal sat on the table like a living thing, its worn leather cover emanating an aura of mystery that filled the room. The pack’s meeting hall was quiet now, save for the crackling of the fireplace and the occasional rustle of papers as Astra flipped through pages of notes she had scrawled.
