And if you hate it, if you truly believe nothing is better, then we will listen. We will consider. We will negotiate. But try first. Before you erase everything. Try.” The First Dark was silent for so long I thought we failed. Thought it would reject us. Reject the offer. Reject the possibility of anything except its original plan. Then it spoke. Quiet. Uncertain. Almost afraid. “How? How do I become something when I am nothing? How do I join existence without destroying myself? Without losing everything I am?”

MELVIN’S POV I could hear words slowly sip into my subconscious. It was completely dark at first and I didn’t remember how I had gotten myself into this darkness in the first place. But a familiar voice kept calling out to me and the darkness started to give way for some light. The light started to dimly fill the dark space at first before it proceeded to completely envelop the area. I felt my body slowly slip off another body as they set me on the ground. As my eyes started to open, I realized that the light coming in was just my eyes opening up and letting in some light removing the darkness behind my closed lids.

Okay, a bit scary. The door opened into the dark room. the dim light that escapes from the corridor casts the silhouettes in the room. I gulped down the bile rising in my thoat. For some reason I was feeling anxious to enter inside, to walk any further. This was foregin territory. I have never been to place like this before and till now I have seen my own share of weird things.

SUMMER’S POINT OF VIEW. Darkness has always felt safer than light. It’s the first thing I realised as consciousness drags me upward in its slow, heavy pull, like surfacing through cold molasses. Their skin had taken on a deep, unnatural darkness, as if the very blood in their bodies had turned black. The features that had once been red; lips, scars, even the smallest markings, had all darkened. It wasn’t just their faces either. Their hands, their feet, even their most private parts had lost all color, swallowed by this strange black hue. Some of the bodies were even worse off. I noticed worms crawling out from their ears, wriggling as they feasted on what was left of the flesh. The sight sent a chill down my spine, but I didn’t let it distract me. I kept making notes, writing down every observation, no matter how small.

I tried to answer, to tell him to get up, to make sense of the spinning lights, but the world folded over me like a closing book. I went down. The last thing I registered before the dark closed in was the shape of the truck’s grill, monstrously close, and the staccato beat of a heart far too loud to be mine. Then nothing but a roar and the tidy, awful finality of falling. ~~~ Light. Too much of it. It burned against my eyelids like fire, dragging me out of the kind of darkness that didn’t feel like sleep — more like nothingness. The air around me hummed with machines, sterile and cold, and my body felt… wrong. Heavy. Distant.
