As a burned out marketing executive, I’d traded my sleek laptop and high rise apartment for a beat up backpack, sturdy hiking boots, and a desperate need to remember what it felt like to breathe without deadlines crushing my chest.

I pressed a kiss to his furred brow, then I stood. The jade pulsed against my chest, guiding me. I focused on its warmth and let it pull me toward the cave entrance. The entrance was partially collapsed from the thaw, but I found a gap between two fallen stones and squeezed through. The rocks scraped my ribs, drawing blood, but I did not stop. Outside, the forest was still. The thaw had ended, and the next freeze had not yet begun. The silence was the same predatory silence as before, but now I moved through it with purpose. I did not have time to be afraid.

I assume Xavier must have ordered them to stop the search after a few days. Now I’m lost in the woods. I can’t go back, even if I want to, but I don’t regret running. I’d rather die out here in the cold woods than return to watch Xavier wed my sister. As I chew on the remnants of sour wild berries I had plucked earlier, I hear a roar nearby. Birds scatter away in groups, abandoning the canopy of tree branches above. My bones stiffen from the sudden disruption of the forest’s peaceful ambience, and I reach for the nearest rock I can get hold of.

Paul replies and hangs up. Leaving my car at the airport, I run to the woods. Once I'm past the tree line, I shift mid-air, jumping over a log. I plant my paws on the ground and let out a howl. I turn my head to see my pack coming through the trees. I give them a look, and I run towards Chloe's scent with my pack right on my heels. Chloe's POV
