The door slams shut behind the last one. It gets quiet, except for the fire. I find a table in the corner. There are bottles everywhere. I grab one with dark liquor and pour some into a mug. It burned my chest so bad and made me cough violently , but I drink more, faster. Pour another. The room starts shifting, and my head felt like it was floating. I want to forget about the throne room, the king's anger, Mother's crying and the guards grabbing me.

I clawed my way back to consciousness through layers of dense fog. Each thought felt sticky, difficult to grasp, like trying to catch smoke with bare hands. My mouth tasted like metal and ashes, my tongue heavy and uncooperative. Light pressed against my closed eyelids, too bright, too insistent. He made a whole table of dishes I loved.
