Hope had soared through me at the thought of actually being free and not having to hide who I was anymore. I was a little worried that the Elders would not believe the information, but I’d cross that bridge when I came to it. I had just hidden the book away for safekeeping when some asshole broke down Anders’s door, a tall scrawny man with scars covering his face and long black hair marched in, evil evident in his gaze. "Who the hell are you?" I yelled at the intruder, readying myself for a fight.

The strange creature's strike was thwarted as dust spewed into the air. Iris was quick enough to react to the ambush. Everyone drew their blades immediately, their gaze fixed on the cloud of dust that had gathered in front of them. Hiss! The hissing sound became more intense, and the intruder appeared soon after. The intruder was a massive snake, whose enormous body had encircled the entire settlement. Its head was enormous enough to swallow a house whole, and its green scales glistened in the sunlight, making it difficult to look at because of all the light flashing off it.

And somewhere in the shadows of my quiet apartment, something very old… stirred. I finally summoned courage to slam the book shut with a sharp snap that echoed through my quiet apartment. My heart was racing, skin flushed hot despite the cool rain still pattering against the windows. That invisible presence lingered in the air like heavy incense — thick, masculine, and far too interested. I couldn’t explain it, but every instinct screamed that opening that book any further tonight would be dangerous. “No,” I whispered to the empty room. “Not tonight.”
