He looked around carefully, and noticed, half hidden beneath a tangle of old ivy near the base of the original doorway, a small weathered stone marker, nearly invisible beneath a century of neglect.
Charles knelt down beside him, brushing the ivy away carefully, and together they uncovered a small, rusted metal door set into the old stone foundation, the kind of hidden space built quietly into old houses for exactly this purpose, holding things too important, or too dangerous, to leave out in the open.
