“Lopez sends his condolences. He said he's got this guy who just dropped in from California. A real tough one, he says. He's looking for a job. If you wouldn't mind seeing him. He would make him available tomorrow.”
“I'm getting out of the game soon, Cain,” he said, watching Cain's reaction intently from the corner of his eye. “Why should I need a tough one?”
Cain picked up the half bottle of whiskey on the table.
“Whiskey?” He waved the bottle at Rico.
“No,” Rico declined. Taking out his cigarette case, he selected one and lit it.
Cain poured whiskey generously into his glass and took a sip.
“I don't have to tell you, Rico, the last hours are always fatal.”
