It’s an old leather-bound book, with a red leather cover and a gold emblem on the front, she turns it to read the spine, “The Parrot and the Hunter. Is this a children’s book or a weird shifter romance novel?” Morpheus laughs, and she sits down and opens it, “Ah, romance novel.” She taps it thoughtfully, “No pictures.” She smiles as Sol flushes and she curls up on the sofa to read, she flips through, “Oh, my apologies, there are pictures.” Sol groans as she takes in the etching of two people clearly fucking each other senseless. “Informative pictures.” Morpheus laughs hard,

I scanned the shelves, my eyes tracing the titles and covers in search of the perfect book to momentarily distract me from the reality of my mother's illness. A vibrant book cover caught my attention, a beautiful couple locked in a passionate embrace against a backdrop of rolling hills and a setting sun. "Love's Everlasting Promise" was emblazoned across the top in elegant script. I knew, in that moment, that this was the book that would temporarily fill the void in my heart.

It hit my shoulder before dropping to the floor. I barely felt the pain. I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. “Perfect,” I muttered. “Just what I needed.” I almost ignored it. But something about that book caught my eye. It wasn’t like the others. The cover was deep red—so dark it looked almost like dried blood in the dim light. The edges were lined with gold that had faded with age. I frowned and bent down to pick it up. It felt heavier than it looked. When I turned it over, I noticed something strange.

Tasha wiggled her brows at her. “Yes, awesome news!” Irene couldn’t hold her excitement as she stamped her feet impatiently, “okay…” Elle smiled back at her friend, urging her to continue, “Capriana Publication is branching out,” She announced it with a wide smile, “The new branch will take up the ‘Romance’ genre,” She screamed with excitement, “And I’ll be the Editor in chief!” “That's great news! Congratulations!” Elle clapped her hands together thrilled by the news. “Finally, you achieved it! Congratulations!” Tasha jumped with joy.

"Sure. I'll give it a try." Her eyes lit up. Soon, she pressed her lips together, nodded, and stepped back to the counter. I took a sip, and it felt like warmth had finally settled into a part of me that had stayed cold for a very long time. Just then, my phone buzzed. I glanced at it; the publisher's editor had sent over a draft cover for my new book. The cover featured a gradually brightening deep blue expanse, with the title "Crossing" printed across it.

It was heavy. The cover was a deep, matte navy blue. In the center, embossed in gold foil that caught the afternoon light, was a simple line drawing. A door. With a lion's head knocker. THE BLUE DOOR A Novel By Elion Marrow Cale stared at the cover. His thumb traced the gold foil. "A Novel," Cale read aloud. "Yeah," Elion said, walking over nervously. He stood a safe distance away, as if the book might bite him. "Legal said we had to classify it as fiction. To avoid lawsuits from Lysander. And the government. And... you know, the laws of physics."
