I pushed past him again, walked into the mansion, and shut the door behind me. I hadn’t stepped foot in here in months. It was spotless. Quiet. Huge. And painfully lonely, I'd called to send all the maids home. I dropped my briefcase by the door and walked into the living room. Everything looked perfect. Everything felt wrong. I sat down slowly, ran my hands over my face, and let my head fall back against the couch. I stared at the ceiling, trying to keep myself from losing it. But the truth? I already had.

A very annoying, very persistent hunger. I frowned. Of all times to become hungry. Slowly, I climbed out of bed. Maybe if I ate something, I would finally be able to sleep. That sounded reasonable enough. After slipping on a light robe, I quietly left my room. The mansion was almost completely silent; most of the servants had long retired for the night. The only sounds were my footsteps echoing softly through the corridor. The peaceful atmosphere should have been comforting. Instead, it made me feel strangely lonely. I shook the thought away.

I still called out wanting someone to answer back, “Is someone here?" Instead of some reply, my own sound echoes in the mansion. Not hungry anymore, I came out of the kitchen. “Is somebody here?" I shout, again. “I am alone so can you please come out?" I don't want to be alone. The silence of this mansion is eating me alive. My own breathing is freaking me out.

I doubt it, but I better not trust myself, I think I'm a proud person, I really don't want him to know that I care too much. I leave the room and notice that there is no one in the whole mansion "where is everyone?", I guess I woke up too late, the silence spreads and I notice my loneliness. I hear that from outside the mansion there is noise of people laughing and chatting, I go out to find out and at least find them.

Looking out at the view from the huge window which was almost the size of a door, I blinked multiple times to hold back my tears. The moment a little breeze hit my open chest, I shuddered a little and breathed out loud. Wrapping my arms around myself to create warmth, I turned around and just walked to the huge bed. I felt lonely. Before leaving the mansion with Ivan, I had been hopeful that things would work out well for us, but then, he had to fuck it all up. This was past ten, yet, he hadn't come home.

It was disgusting and revolting what he would say. “I am so hungry,” I pouted, hugging my Barbie as I sat alone in my bed, “maybe I can go find some cookies in the kitchen. They are all out for clubbing so that means I am safe in my mansion,” I smiled at the thought of being alone in the mansion. I didn’t particularly appreciate walking around and getting taunted by everyone. Since Hassel wasn’t at home as he too has accompanied everybody else for a club night, I felt secure. Once out of my room, I instantly felt like I have made a wrong decision.

Silent fountains drained of water. I stare at my daughter's tomb and pick up the leaves covering her name. I hear boots scuffing over dry ground. Cleo stands beside me, his face somber. "Alone again," he says. "Not alone," I reply, dully. There are still few people living in the mansion, besides myself. I command a dozen more soldiers and many more employees. I have a large army at my disposal. I'm only as "alone" as I was before Emily came. Which is to say, completely.

Chapter Three: The First Night Alone ‎ ‎The mansion was silent, almost unnervingly so. Shadows from the chandeliers stretched across the marble floors, turning every corner into a potential hiding place for secrets. I hugged my thin robe closer, the fabric doing little to keep out the chill that had nothing to do with the temperature. ‎ ‎I hadn’t expected him to appear at the wedding, and now, standing alone in my new home, I realized I hadn’t expected the loneliness either. The echoes of my own footsteps made my heart pound, as if reminding me of the emptiness Ethan had left behind.
