She picked up after the first ring.
“Kayden,” her voice was calm, but there was an edge to it, a tension I could feel even through the phone. She was always like that, calm, but never passive. Kelly always knew more than she let on.
“The elders,” I started, pinching the bridge of my nose as I paced the room. “They’ve decided there’s going to be a duel. During the full moon.”
There was a pause on the other end. I could hear her sharp intake of breath, the silence thickening before she finally spoke. “How many days?” Her voice was low now, laced with worry.
