“There’s the Freshman Duel next month. Everyone keeps talking about it like it’s life or death.” Charlie sat up straighter, nodding solemnly. “It kinda is.” My eyebrows shot up. “Thanks, that’s comforting.” “I mean, not literally,” he said quickly, “but… the duel decides your standing in the academy. People who rank high get access to better classes, better spell libraries, even private mentorships from professors or elite alumni. Some even get recruited for special units.” “And those who don’t?” I asked. “Fall behind. Fast.” I looked down at my hands, scarred, calloused, “I’m not ready for that,” I whispered. “I’m not even ready for this ball.”

He said and everyone looked at each other.

The wooden door at the end of the ground flung open and we all watched with wide eyes as Xander and Ryan sauntered out of it. They stopped in the center of the duel ground and faced each other. A guard rose up to the stage and announced in the mic, "Today, we are all gathered here to witness the duel between Lycan King, Xander Stoneheart, and rogue leader, Ryan Hooper. The latter had challenged the former to a duel which was accepted by the King. To ensure the fair results, we have Council members here with us. According to the terms and conditions, the one who'll win this duel will get to have Delilah Dimitri as his mate."

“It's a draw.” A guy called Taylor says, clapping his hands. “In order to have this settled, Nelly and Ashanti will have a duel after training today. Whoever wins will occupy the second spot.” “I already said it's not about duels. It's about origin! The idea of settling this with a duel is preposterous!” The guy who bashed me a while ago argues, but Taylor shakes his head and looks at Delta Kyle who's watching us all very attentively.

Soren raised a hand, and the arena fell deathly silent. “To sharpen your instincts and hone your dominance, I am introducing a new structure to this academy: the Dominion Ranking System. From this day forward, every one of you will be ranked from one to one hundred, a measure of your strength, strategy, and worth.”

The Oracle explained for the sake of those that didn't understand. King Theron's expression darkened. "Elise Rashford, do you understand what you are invoking? A Sacred Duel is fought to submission or death. There is no forfeit, no mercy. One of you will leave the arena victorious. The other may not leave at all." "I understand," Elise said, her voice steady despite the wildness in her eyes. "And I accept those terms. Do you, sister? Or will you hide behind your unnatural gifts rather than face me honestly?"

clenching his fist. "Nah, Row, you're not coming this time," trying not to let him see the tears in my eyes, I look away. He and I both knew this mission was suicide; we weren't expected to come home alive, just to make sure we accomplished it. We both knew what the mission was: Enter The Alpha Academy, where the heirs of the three largest packs in the nation were training, take them out one by one, avenge our families, and end the war.
