When dusk came, they were back on their living room floor, drinking wine and talking about deep things. “But, you know what? He’s still pretty cute. Those darn dimples.” Izzy shook her head, pouring some wine into her glass. She was just talking about the new annoying yet cute guy she’s ‘seeing’. But when Izzy started telling her their adventures, it felt more like just two people hooking up.

Silence. Then Izzy smiled, stepping closer. “Oh, that’s good. That means we have a fresh start.” She pulled me into a hug. I let her. And then, just as she leaned in, her lips brushing my ear, she whispered, “Our Luna.” I didn’t flinch. I hugged her back with the same force, letting my fingers press just a little into her spine. Two could play this game. Aria and Liz exchanged a glance but remained composed, their expressions unreadable as Izzy finally pulled away, her smirk still in place.

Izzy panted heavily, still rolling on the floor with the substance still burning her throat. Anika nodded, and Kaidos yanked Izzy up by her hair, dragging her toward the board. As Anika approached, her voice dropped to a whisper. “Go ahead.” Kaidos hoisted Izzy into the air, her body suspended above the board before he slammed her down with brutal force. “Ohhhhhh!” Izzy screamed as the blades bit deep into her skin, her jaw clenched in a desperate bid to stifle the agony as the razor-sharp points scraped against her bones.

Marchessa looked at Izzy with a gleam of hatred, her eyes shooting darts. “Many a shifter has met an unfortunate accident in Daikon. I would hate for that to happen to you,” Marchessa said, looking in Izzy’s eyes as she spoke. “Oh dear, either you do speak to outsiders or you no longer consider me one, whichever the cast may be, I am pleased to see you no longer need to use a thirteen year old to relay your message. That must be exhausting,” Izzy said as she leaned against the table watching Marchessa. She took a bite of her roll and chewed slowly, keeping her eye on the dark-haired girl.
