“I was worried. I thought something happened to you.” “I’m fine but Jace isn’t,” I whispered. Her eyes widened, as she pulled away. “What do you mean by that?” “Anna…” my voice trailed off. “Speak to me, Rae!” Anna voiced out the minute I stopped talking. “Jace is dead.” I managed to say and I watched as her eyes widened in disbelief. “That’s not true!” She spat. “You’re lying.” “I’m telling the truth, Anna. Jace saved Von’s life. Took the blade himself.”

He ruined everything, from his career to life. Jace had tried several times to end his life but always failed. Something was holding Jace from death. He became a monster who could not die and was forced to live eternally with his monster face. However, Jace must see one by one the deaths of those around him. It started with his parents. A wounded Jace grows even more lonely when the people who love him die and are lost forever. Jace tried to eliminate the flash of memories filled with bloodshed from his mind.

Jace’s pulse stopped for a moment. Aiden’s voice turned colder. “He was shot. And he died.” Something inside Jace cracked. He could almost feel it splinter, like bone under intense pressure. Morgan, tried to stop whoever these masked men were… Morgan, who had always smiled at him gently, always tried to understand him… Dead. Jace squeezed his eyes shut as emotion punched him so brutally he thought he would fall out of the chair. A single breath escaped him, sharp and painful. Aiden… why? Why any of this?

The moment he was gone, my legs finally gave out. I sank onto the nearest stump, elbows braced on my knees, breathing hard. My hands shook uncontrollably, like they didn’t belong to me anymore. “He’s dead,” someone whispered. “Killian’s going to snap him in half,” another said, not even lowering his voice. “Did you see Alpha Killian’s face?” Jace said, his grin gone now. “That wasn’t normal.” I didn’t answer. I stayed where I was, breathing through the burning ache ripping through my arms and chest. Pain washed over me in relentless waves, sharp and heavy and exhausting.

After the last drop was swallowed, Lexon began coughing again, spitting more blood onto his chest as he coughed. "It's not enough, he needs more blood, a lot more!" Azrael said, then looked toward Jace. Jace wrapped his arms around himself and whimpered. He didn't want to die! He didn't want to feel his body being drained of all of its blood and he slowly drifted away. Jace couldn't understand how letting his mate drink all of his blood was going to help the situation. Azrael let out a breath, knowing that was definitely not going to happen, then turned to look at Michael.

Jace said, then pulled his shirt over his head. “The consequences of killing a council member is death. Most are not strong enough to fight the bond anyways. What just happened was another council member killed the other to gain power. I am almost positive they did so to become stronger to take on us. To take you. I am worried about Douglas, he was always the one out of the three that wanted to do the right thing. At the same time I can see Bruce and Lance fighting over who gets to lay claim to you. They’re putting more on duty as we speak. 'Okay, call me as soon as you have spoken to Nolan. We need to know who is trying to kill Ace.' We end the call and Ace and I crawl into bed and hold each other until we fall asleep. As soon as we wake, we get dressed and go straight to the hospital. Ace sends Jack a text to let him know where we are. A nurse takes us to Nolan. He has many cords and machines attached to him. I carefully lean over and hug him. His hand rubs my arm.

It dawned on me that he was telling the truth. My chest tightened. “NO!!!” I screamed as pain tore through my chest. I lost my balance on the chair and fell on the floor. “Serafine,” Jace called softly, concerned. His eyes teary. “No. You’re wrong.” I cried. “I wish I were.” Jace said, wiping off his tears. “But I saw her corpse. I attended her burial. I saw them bury her. I was going to bring you to her grave once you were safe.”

Then nothing. Cassian opened it with shaking hands. When he saw the still frame they had frozen at the end, the last of the color left his face. Even through the blur, he knew the coat, the braid, the turn of her body. It was Lyra. Half an hour earlier she had still been standing in front of him, quiet and pale, telling him to go. Now she was dead? No. It was impossible. He shoved past Selene and ran. By the time he reached the cremation hall, he no longer looked like the composed alpha everyone knew. He looked like a wolf driven clean out of his mind.

When I saw him slumped over the bench in the park gasping for air, I stood by silently, witnessing his last moments. I had asked Von to drop him at the nearest hospital, hopefully his family got informed and he was given a proper burial unlike the other bodies that would burn to teach the other rats in the streets that we were onto them. I was not a fan of Jace, but I knew he had been adamant about seeing Alma. How was I to tell her he was dead? I couldn’t answer her questions if she had any. There was no way I could explain the way he died without implicating myself.
