Jake’s whole chest tightened watching her walk outside with Janet. Then—three figures emerged from the shadows. Tall. Masked. Costumes like hideous zombies. One of them shoved something over Jerica’s face and she struggled, twisting and kicking—but another jabbed her with something and she slumped. “No, no, no,” Jake muttered, gripping the mouse tighter.

Ellie could see Hannah turn to talk to Marcus but she couldn't hear what they were talking about. The hall was decorated elaborately with pumpkins, leaves, witch hats, cauldrons, fires and feasts set up throughout the room. There was a long table piled with food buffet style and people were grazing along the table. In the middle of the hall was a dance floor and at the end, a band was playing the cover for the greatest hits of the year. As sudden as a flash of lightning, a thought came to Ellie. Her eyes widened as she realized she may have just figured out a piece of the puzzle. She blocked her thoughts, if Jake figured out what she was thinking, he wouldn't be happy.

I told her, and there was silence. “Pumpkin? Where are you?” I called her, but then my eardrums almost broke when the ladies behind me screamed when indeed, a big jack-o'-lantern suddenly appeared with its faint orange light illuminating our surroundings. Is that a balloon? Where on earth did that ridiculous pumpkin come from? “What the fudge? Pryce, where are you?” I cursed and tried to find my mate, feeling a sudden rush of fear in my system. I flinched when there was a gunshot again, and Drea told her wife, “Stop shooting it, Anne!”

She winked and started riding ahead of them. "Come on, let us go. Bitch is crazy!" Piper sat properly in the car as Billy ignited the engine. When they got to the mall, they saw Willow's bicycle parked right outside. Then they alighted from the car and started walking toward the mall. At the outside of the mall was a huge scarecrow that had the head of a pumpkin. Billy hit the head of the pumpkin and it made Piper and Hazel laugh. "Come on, let us get the damn costume!" They entered the mall.

Jack hurried into the kitchen and came back with the bowl of pumpkin soup that Mira had prepared earlier “Eat… eat some.” “What are you doing?” Mira felt even more embarrassed. She stood up hurriedly and almost fell down. Jack quickly snaked his arms around her waist and helped her to steady herself. “Let’s go to the front room and eat properly.” Mira was so embarrassed she couldn’t lift her head. To make things even worse, Jack chuckled. Mira went to the kitchen and bought another bowl of pumpkin soup for Jack before sitting down to eat. They decided to do go to bed early so that Jack could go to Uncle Harry’s to get the plough horse.

Lowering myself to her level, I held her shoulders gently and brushed a strand of hair from her face. “No,” I said softly. “No, honey. You just had a nightmare. That’s all.” She didn’t look convinced. “Mummy has no reason to hurt Daddy,” I added quickly. “I’ll be back soon. And guess what? We’re spending Christmas here with Grandma and Uncle Elliot.” Her face lit up instantly. “Yeah.” “I’m just going to get a few things for Christmas,” I said. “I’ll be back.” I turned away before she could ask anything else.

For her courage, she was rewarded with a violent death for breaking our laws. Two days later, a bitter winter began on Halloween with the wind bellowing like a bull, and there was no celebration of the harvest. The clan hurried to gather as much of the late grains and grasses before they were covered with snow as they could, leaving the carved pumpkins and tied stalks to be buried by winter’s wrath. The Keepers led us young ones to the sheltered places out of the blowing snow while the adults worked in the open.

On Halloween, I was preparing the children’s area for the workshop when Mr. Sasagawa appeared, carrying a cardboard box in his botanical garden staff jacket. “Ms. Ono, will these do?” The box was packed with intricately carved miniature pumpkins. “They’re beautiful… Thank you so much.” We began arranging them along the top of the decorated bookshelves. Mr. Sasagawa helped, taking care not to disturb the origami decorations on the wall. Each pumpkin had a single letter carved into it. Placed in order, they spelled:
