She turned the screen toward him, speechless. He dried his hands, crossed the room, and read over her shoulder. Then he grinned so wide it made her tear up. "Elena. This is it." She laughed through her tears. "I didn’t think anyone would want it." He took her face in his hands. "I wanted it. I always will. And now someone else does too. That’s not an accident." They told Lila together. She didn’t quite understand what a publisher was, but when Jack explained it as, "Mommy’s book is going to be in libraries and bookstores," her face lit up.

Emma was in her home office working on the outline for her fourth novel when Jake burst through the door with his laptop open and an expression of pure joy on his face. "Emma, you need to see this right now," Jake said, setting his laptop on her desk and pointing to the screen. Emma looked at the webpage Jake was showing her and felt her breath catch. The New York Times Bestseller List for the current week showed "Courage in Love" at number three on the paperback fiction list, with a small star indicating it was a new entry.

"Thank you. So… about the book?" Jack handed me the smaller version. I flipped through its pages, and what I saw made my breath catch. This is my story. This is me. The book… it was my diary. Rewritten. But how? Everything that happened here was exactly what had happened back then. "Who wrote this book?" I asked, my voice low. "Some say she wrote it herself," Jack said. "Some say a human named Elias did. Others believe… it wrote itself." "Wow… so why did it stop? Why isn’t it finished?"

Emma opened it to find the first proof copy of her book: A Love That Lingers. The cover was simple an image of snow falling on a wooden cabin but the title gleamed in silver letters. Her name below it felt unreal. Jake walked in, took one look at the book, and grinned. “It’s real. You’re an author.” Emma ran her fingers over the pages, stunned. “It still feels like someone else’s story.” Jake wrapped his arms around her. “But it’s yours. Every word. Every scar and victory. You earned this.” Later that night, Emma curled up by the fire, book in hand, Lila asleep upstairs. She read the final page aloud to herself:

He clicked the phone off and set it on a small outdoor table. An old copy of Old Man and the Sea sat tucked into one of the chair cushions. Jack pulled it out and began leafing through the pages, trying to remember the plot from lit class. It wasn't long before he heard motion from inside. Emma stepped out on the porch, her eyes distant but strong as she looked out at the water.

Then he clears his throat to speak, and when he does, his voice is low and authoritative, eerily reminiscent of his father, and his words give me déjà vu.
